Edinburgh is the capital city of Scotland and the cultural capital
of the Britain. Edinburgh is one of the United Kingdom's most visited
cities, and deservedly so, attracting millions of visitors each
year. Edinburgh City is a very beautiful place to visit and is revered
by tourists around the world for the architecture on display throughout
the city.
Edinburgh is a city that is not only famous for its beauty, but
also because of the significant role it has played in the history
of Scotland, and indeed for its role in the history of the United
Kingdom as a whole. As a result of the historical importance of
Edinburgh over the last 500 years there are many many buildings
still standing which are rich in history and importance.
In a similar way to Rome, Edinburgh is also built on seven hills.
The seven hills of Edinburgh are the result of former volcanos.
The hills range in size with the most significant being Arthur's
Seat which dominates the cityscape of Edinburgh. While Aruthur's
Seat is a famous hill, the most significant as regards fame is Castle
Rock on which stands the impressive Edinburgh Castle.
Edinburgh is a city of two halves, the medieval 'Old Town' and
the much more modern 'Georgian Town.' This diversity of culture
only serves to make Edinburgh a much more interesting place to visit.
The city is also tourist friendly with many of the attractions that
are very popular with tourists located centrally and all within
easy walking distance. Be warned that short walking distances can
and will include hills.
You can take in the splendid Botanical Gardens or visit Princess
Street from fantastic shopping or visit the top of Arthur's Seat
for panaramic views over the city. Only then will you understand
fully the why Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland. As Robert Louis
Stevenson has said, "Edinburgh is what Paris ought to be."
